MACY’S & THE LINKS, INCORPORATED HONOR JANET NKUBANA
Global Leader Recognized for Empowering Local Rural
Women to Achieve Economic Stability
Chicago, IL – (December 8, 2008). Tomorrow afternoon at Macy’s on State Street, distinguished global leader and founder and president of the Gahaya Links, Janet Nkubana, will be honored for her work empowering women to achieve economic stability. Ms. Nkubana, a basket weaver from the Rwanda Path to Peace Movement, will be presented with a check for $5,000 from The Links, Incorporated representing the proceeds from an auction of Rwandan baskets donated by Macy’s.
Dr. Gwendolyn Lee, President of The Links, Incorporated stated, “We are very proud of the work that Janet Nkubana has done on such a global scale. We are also very grateful to Macy’s for their dedication and commitment to this very important cause.”
Ms. Nkubana has been awarded with the 2008 Laureate for the Africa Prize for leadership for the sustainable end of hunger for her work with the Rwandan Peace Basket Weavers. At the event, Ms. Nkubana will describe her work, demonstrate weaving and sign baskets that are giving hope to women throughout Africa, empowering them and their communities.
