THE LINKS, INCORPORATED SPONSORS OVER SEVEN HUNDRED
PARTICIPATE IN UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE
Event Focuses On Observing International Day of Peace
[Washington, DC] [September 15, 2009] – On Friday September 18th, over three hundred junior and high school students, sponsored by The Links, Incorporated, participated in the United Nations 12th annual Youth Conference. Thousands of students participated. This event marks the first partnership between The Links, Incorporated and the Educational Outreach Department of the United Nations.
The Links, Incorporated has made it possible for 340 students to attend at the UN Headquarters site in New York and over 400 more participated in various related web casts and videoconferences at sites across the country including venues in Miami, Ohio, New Jersey and Mississippi. All 270 Chapters of The Links, Inc had an opportunity to sponsor students to attend the conference through arrangements made by the International Trends and Services Program Facet.
Dr. Gwendolyn Lee, the National President of The Links, Incorporated stated, “This is a very exciting opportunity for young people to get involved directly with the United Nations. It is important to show students that we can all come together for a common purpose in what is rapidly becoming a true global society.”
Linda Zango-Haley, Director of the International Trends and Services Facet, conveyed her excitement about the participation from Chapters all over the United States by stating, “Because The Links, Incorporated is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), it is important that we participate in as many United Nations activities and programs as possible, especially those programs that are educating our youth. We are encouraged by the support for this program and the many others that we undertake in order to help young people locally, nationally and internationally.”
Similar initiatives undertaken by The Links, Incorporated include the LIFE Program (The Links International Foreign Affairs and Business Empowerment Program for Youth) which targets minority youth and seeks to increase awareness in international affairs and global career opportunities.
The 2009 Youth Conference theme is “Peace and Development - Disarmament Now”. The event focused on the importance of disarmament of nuclear weapons and small arms. The program consisted of opening remarks by Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and President of the 64th UN General Assembly H.E. Ali Abdussalam Treki of Libya, to be followed by an exchange between students assembled at international peacekeeping missions and student audiences at the UN Headquarters in New York.
This is the first in a series of UN student conferences in the year. Other sessions will address the History of Transatlantic Slavery and Environmental Issues.
Celebrity United Nations Messengers of Peace appointed by the Secretary General - Michael Douglas, Jane Goodall, Dr. Elie Wiesel and Midori Goto - also addressed the students.
