The Heart Truth for Women of Color Initiative
A National Awareness Campaign
The Heart Truth is a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department on Health and Human Services (DHHS); American Heart Association; WomenHeart: the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease; and other organizations committed to the health and well-being of women.
The Heart Truth Campaign seeks to:
- Increase awareness that heart disease is the #1 killer of women.
- Increase awareness that having risk factors can lead to heart disease, disability, and death.
- Encourage women to talk to their doctors about heart disease risk factors and to take action to prevent or control these risk factors.
NHLBI developed “The Heart Truth for Women: A Speaker’s Guide” to help women in the community to learn The Heart Truth. Chapters can use this kit which contains a PowerPoint presentation to hold a one- hour informational session on women and heart disease. A copy of the presentation can be downloaded by visiting http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/hearttruth/material/kitslide1.htm.
