Educating people of African descent about the importance of heart health has long been mission-critical for The Links, Incorporated. Founded in 1946 by two friends who wanted to do good in their communities, the organization now boasts a membership of more than 16,000 professional women of African descent across the United States, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the United Kingdom. Central to their work in the communities they serve is raising awareness about heart disease—the leading cause of death among African Americans and people of African descent —and teaching people how to prevent it. As a Healthy Hearts Network partner, The Links has worked diligently with The Heart Truth® on efforts that further this goal—spearheading National Wear Red Day events, engaging in February heart month activities, conducting cardiovascular risk education programs, and holding Walk for Healthy Living Walk-A-Thons across the country.
